What type of hours
do you have to work to be a volunteer? Volunteering is very easy and flexible. You can select the number of hours you want to work at the time you would like to work them. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities to suit your taste, including:
The Town Lake Animal Center has a volunteer orientation the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 to 11:30 am. The orientation covers the wide range of opportunities for volunteers, including a tour of the Center and an information packet that describes many behind the scene activities. Not much time to work? Not a problem, helping out just 4 hours a month can mean a lot to a pet in need, even if you are doing office work. Here are just a few of the many opportunities that volunteers have to assist Austin Pets: Volunteer Opportunities Adoption Greeter: Assist the adoption team and the public in selecting appropriate pets for their lifestyle. Help staff process adoption applications. Advise prospective adopters about the physical, social, medical and behavioral needs of specific animals. Administration: Assist with a variety of clerical and technical duties. Examples include typing, filing, faxing information, and assembling materials for meetings or mailouts. Clerical and computer skills are necessary. Grounds/Maintenance: Provide general repairs and upkeep of kennels areas and grounds. Foster Care: Become a foster parent to kittens and puppies or other special needs animals. These animals need extra TLC care on a short-term basis to become adoptable. Lost and Found: Help match animals in the stray area to lost pet ads in the newspaper or to the lost file in the reclaim office. Try to match lost ads with found animal files. Greet the public as they come in to find their lost pets and direct them to all the appropriate areas. Special care is needed not to handle the stray animals. TLC (Tender Loving Care) Specialist: Under general supervision walk, bathe, brush and play with the shelter animals that are available for adoption. Provide clean and disinfected toys and bedding for the animals. Report medical or behavioral problems to staff. Assist with the continual laundry needs. Veterinary Assistant: Serve as a member of the Animal Health & Temperament Team, performing basic animal health care activities. Safely and humanely handle all animals, monitor physical condition, and administer medication and vaccinations. Experience is necessary to work in this area. Off-site Adoptions: Working
with other volunteers, transport and participate in off-site adoption events in
the local community to provide another venue for the animals to gain exposure
for adoption. For more information, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 708-6017.
