September 2000, Our Visit to the Austin Zoo

There have been many recent movies about vampires. The stories of vampires date back to thousands of years ago. Each country has its own spin on the legend of the vampire. The American vampire legends originated and follow the European legends, which makes sense because our ancestors were from England. The fact of the matter is there are over 1,000 species of bats known to man. Out of these, there is only one real vampire bat. The real vampire bat is only found in Latin America. They generally do not attack people. They attack livestock. They do drink blood, but only a teaspoon full at a time. The bats here in Austin are Mexican Free-Tail Bats, which will avoid you if at all possible. They eat insects and help keep many pests away from your home. |
