The mascots that you see in school, professional sports and businesses date back thousands of years. The word "mascot" means "A person, an animal, or an object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team." www.dictionary.com The word is derived from a French slang word 'mascotte,' which was derived from the word 'masco' meaning witch. Mascots date back to caveman days, with cave paintings in different parts of the world. Indians also had mascots in their totem poles and tribal statues. Historically, mascots have been the animals that men admired. The
courage of a lion or the strength of a bear is symbolized in the mascot.
Through the admiration and symbolism of these magnificent creatures, it was
hoped that some of their natural powers would be transmitted to the tribe.
Today, we still use mascots as a sign of the qualities we hope to possess. |
