Currently 30 people work at Bat Conservation International.  It takes many types of workers to fulfill their mission of protecting bats and their habitats all over the world.

Administrative people help to carry out the day to day business operations.  Other mangers are in charge of membership drives and business development.  Yes, even nonprofit corporations must treat their efforts as a type of a business, although it benefits so many people and animals.  Publications staff design magazines and literature to help in the education effort.  Of course, there are many different scientists which actually research and study the bats and their habitats.

Information on current projects can be found on the BCI website:  www.batcon.org.

What does a typical day incur for a bat researcher?

Jobs vary by project, location, and time of year.

In the summer, you may spend your days taking the temperatures of caves.  You may be called upon to advise mining corporations or state agencies.  You may construct a gate for a mine opening.

Other researchers may take photographs and videos of the bats they are studying.  This type of documentation is becoming increasingly important.

During the summer, a local intern was on hand to help visitors watching the bats at the Congress Bridge.  He participated in the program by handing out flyers and answering questions.  He also gave lectures to small groups.

What is the best thing about your work?

The knowledge that your work is benefiting the planet.  There is also an unexpected admiration from your peers.

There are few other types of careers that allow you to enjoy wildlife and nature.

What type of education is necessary to do this type of research?

A Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology, or other natural science
Environment Education
Field experience is also very important.  Universities, state agencies and federal agencies all offer opportunities to gain this experience.
An ability to communicate well, both through writing and public lectures will offer great rewards in this line of work

What types of volunteers are needed?

Most of the volunteer positions involve simple office work.  Positions include clerical support, data entry and library assistants.

Trained volunteers are able to help provide lectures to colleges and local schools.
