Dromaius (or Dromiceius) novaehollandiae

Home:  Southern and Western Australia's dry open plains

Food:  Seeds, fruits, flowers, leaves and grains

Size:    Approximately 6 feet tall
              Approximately 110 pounds

Emu Trivia:

  • Only female emus make a sound.  When they are excited, they make a drumming noise in their throat.

  • While the female Emu lays the eggs, the male is responsible for the care of the eggs and the young.  Once the eggs are laid, the male Emu keeps the eggs warm until they are hatched.

  • Emu can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

  • If an Emu is cornered by an attacker, it will kick with its three-toed feet.
